My name is John Nelson. I am a Senior Visual Effects Supervisor. That means I am responsible for figuring out
visual effects in films to show what is too expensive, too dangerous or impossible to achieve by any other means.
I use 3D computer graphics, computer 2D compositing, green screen photography, miniatures and other techniques
to create the visual effects shots needed to tell the story and show the spectacle for feature films.
I have supervised twenty-three feature films. Before that I worked as an animator and technical director at ILM
on "Terminator 2" (my best shot is where the shotgunned head of the T-1000 reseals itself). Earlier in my career
I worked a director, cameraman, animator and technical director at Robert Abel and Associates on hundreds of TV
commercials that required special effects. Coming from the camera department, I like to shoot as many real things as
possible and use them to create visual effects shots.
In visual effects you can create anything (given enough time and money), but the most important question about any
visual effect is "what does this do to reinforce the story?".
With visual effects limits are important. Limits define jeopardy and the rules you set up must be obeyed. The
simplest solution is usually the best solution in visual effects. Everything must look real, good and fit in perfectly.
Great visual effects are not about how much detail you put in a shot, they are about how the shot delivers what the story needs at that moment.
I have been nominated for the Academy Award for best achievement in visual effects four times ("Gladiator" in 2000,
"I Robot" in 2005, "Iron Man" in 2008 and "Blade Runner 2049" in 2018), winning twice (for "Gladiator" and for "Blade Runner 2049"). I like films that are cinematic in telling good stories with memorable characters. Those films can be large or small, they just must be special. History and Science Fiction have always been magic to me. What
those genres tell us about being human is epic.
